Fishball Sauce

If you’re a street food lover, you probably know what fishball is. It’s this ball of street food goodness that’s dipped in different sauces offered by street vendors in Manila. If you’re trying to replicate this street food experience at home, you should try out this recipe! Fishball, kikiam, squiad balls, and kwek kwek are best dipped in a thick sweet sauce called fishball sauce.

 


Filipino Street Food: Fishball Sauce Recipe

Serves: 2 cups
Ingredients
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 cup Lemon-Lime Soda (Sprite/7-Up)
  • ¼ cup Soy Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Cornstarch
  • 2 tsp Flour
  • ¼ cup Brown Sugar
  • ¼ cup Onion, minced
  • 1 tbsp Garlic, minced
  • To Taste Salt and Pepper
Procedure
  1. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the water, soda, soy sauce, cornstarch, flour, and brown sugar. Mix well until everything is dissolved and free of lumps.
  2. Transfer in a casserole and cook it over medium heat. Stir continuously until the sauce thickens.
  3. Add in the onion and garlic and simmer it under low heat for another 5 minutes. You can also add red chilies for that sweet spicy taste.
  4. Transfer to a sauce dish or metallic-lined small paper plates for a more traditional feel of eating your favorite street foods. Serve with your favorite fried fish balls, kikiam, kwek kwek, or squid balls.
