It all began with a bottle of the Conductor Merlot on my birthday from Tita. I was instantly a fan of this Philip Shaw red wine. I had heard that Orange in Central West New South Wales is a great region for cool climate Shiraz, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris – but hearing about it and tasting oneself are two different things, and I was really taken by this wine. What was even more impressive was the price. Located 6 hours drive from Sydney, Orange is a little harder to get to on weekend trips and that remoteness means better prices.
At an Orange wine exhibition in Sydney several weeks later, I tried the rest of the Philip Shaw range. It is very rare to find wineries that can produce more than one or two varietals at a consistent level of quality. 8 varieties on the tasting and Philip Shaw just did not have a bad wine – I either liked it, or loved it. When I conceived of my plan to bring premium Australian wines to Manila, I knew Philip Shaw had to be among the mix and in this January, we took our first commercial sample to be sold exclusively by Wine by Chris Urbano.
