What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when somebody says kakanin? Biko, right? Fast food for merienda? Thanks, but no thanks. A slice of biko is all a homegrown Pinoy needs to satiate his need for a sweet, filling treat! And the best part? It’s price is no more than P10 per slice!
Biko is a very popular merienda snack of Filipinos. It is a mixture of glutinous rice cooked in coconut cream and brown sugar and is topped with “latik” the toasted crumble residue when you heat up the coconut milk.
Biko is often served on a “bilao”, a bamboo woven plate that is lined with banana leaves that gives off that native scent. Biko is very popular during fiestas and family celebrations as well.
In this episode of Maputing Cooking, Chris Urbano tries his hand at cooking this famous kakanin he loved eating when he was still a student in the country. Check out this video on how to cook biko and learn a thing or two from this home chef.
